USA and Australia Expected to Roll to Easy Wins over their Counterparts

2020 Tokyo Olympic Men's Basketball Games Preview, Betting Odds & Parlay Predictions

Team USA rebounded from their first loss in Men’s Olympic basketball since 2004 with a resounding, albeit unsurprising 120-66 victory over Iran in Group A action. Next up will be another matchup against a huge underdog when they face off against the Czech Republic.

USA outscored Iran 82-43 after three quarters, with Iran having a high of 18 points in the second quarter. They may have taken their foot off the gas slightly as Iran scored 23 points in the fourth. The question is, how relevant will that performance translate against a Czech team they are 23.5 points favorites to beat?

The Czechs beat Iran in their opening matchup 84-78 in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated. The Czechs led 67-46 after three quarters before cruising in the fourth. They followed it up with a 20 point defeat to France in their second game.

It’s hard to gauge much from USA’s win over Iran, except that it’s giving a team that been cobbled together at the last minute, glorified exhibition games to come together. That’s how it goes when two players came in as Covid substitutes (Javale McGee, Keldon Johnson) and three more (Khris Middleton, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday) wrapped up the NBA Finals on the eve of the games.

Against Iran, the high minute players were on the floor for just 23 minutes in Damian Lillard and Holiday and I’d expect a similar approach here.

Tomas Satoransky and Jan Vesley are arguably the highest profile players on the Czech team. Vesley was drafted sixth overall in the 2011 draft, but has been out of the league since 2014. Satoransky is currently a backup point guard on the Bulls.

Australia has never won a medal in men’s basketball, but they have come out strong in Group B play with wins over Italy and Nigeria.

It was a narrow 86-83 win over the Italians for an Australian team that features four accomplished NBA players in their starting five. Patty Mills has led the way with 20.5 points and 5.5 assists through the first two games.

Germany dropped a close one to Italy in their opener, 92-82 and bounced back with a 99-92 win over Nigeria.

Germany is led by a couple of NBA players, Moritz Wagner and Issac Bonga, but their strong play is also a product of players who know each other well, playing in the same league and in international competitions.

A win for Australia ensures a top spot finish in their group, while Germany needs to win to ensure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Australia vs. Germany (N/A, 4:20 am ET)
Australia -8½ O/U 171½

Germany has been able to play Italy and Nigeria close and they have put up some solid points to do so. I think Australia brings their A-game as they get ready for the elimination games and that helps to shut that down.
The Pick: Australia 86-72
Australia -8½ & Under 171½

USA got a wake-up call with their loss to France, and I expect them to be just as focused in this one on the way to an easy win.
