2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games Men's Basketball Preview, Betting Odds & Predictions

The Olympics are set to start at the end of this week and the men’s event kicks off on Saturday with the preliminary round when Iran (+50000) takes on the Czech Republic (+10000)

This is a 12-team tournament with the team’s split up into three groups. The top two teams in each group plus the two highest third place finishers will advance to the quarterfinals and single elimination games.

Team USA (-550) has owned this event ever since professionals began to play in 1992, winning six of seven gold medals. In fact, their history of dominance at the Olympics goes all the way back to the first time basketball has been part of the festivities.

The most mind-boggling stat is that in 18 all-time appearances they have won the gold 15 times and they have lost just five times, ever!

So the pressure is on for this year’s squad to maintain the legacy and it grew after some disappointing exhibition results in Las Vegas last week. First was a shocking loss to Nigeria, followed by another to Australia.

The news got worse when one of their best players, Bradley Beal had to withdraw due to Covid protocols and veteran Kevin Love pulled out as well due to injury. Rotational player Jerami Grant who had a career season with Detroit last year may also have to withdraw and is currently in the protocols.

Their replacements are much less heralded players as the Spurs Keldon Johnson and the Nuggets JaVale McGee will join in their place.

Adding to the complexities of jelling as a team is that three players they are counting on most, Devin Booker, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday are currently battling in a grueling NBA Finals with game six set for Tuesday. If it goes seven, the last game will be on Thursday. So who knows what kind of game they’ll still have for the elimination round and how it will all come together?

The team will be led by Kevin Durant, Damion Lillard, Draymond Green, Jayson Tatum, Zach LaVine and Bam Adebayo, so there is still plenty of talent. But is there enough of an opening for one of the European or South American teams who have had a lot more time to gel to get the gold?

Team Spain (+900) is the second favorite and they will be led by the ageless Gasol brothers, and Ricky Rubio who have plenty of NBA experience. But what they’ll really be counting on is that most of their players have played together on the national team for a long time. They are also the defending world champions, which took place two years ago. And that kind of experience counts in a tournament like this.

Team Australia (+1200) will feature six NBA players, led by Patty Mills and Joe Ingles, but one player they won’t have is Ben Simmons. The 76ers point guard is skipping it after a disastrous playoff. Australia has never won a medal in men’s basketball.

Argentina (+4000) is usually a frisky squad and they too will be relying on a ton of experience playing together. At the same time they are a huge long shot to win gold because they don’t have any gamebreakers. In the most recent FIBA AmeriCup the leading scorer was Fjellerup Maximo who averaged 10.2 PPG.

Gold Medal Prediction: ( USA -550)
Spain and Australia could give team USA a close game, but even with a roster in flux, it is hard to see a team led by Durant, Lillard Tatum, Green and Adebayo losing in this tournament. They should dominate on both ends of the floor and then when Booker, Middleton and Holiday come over for the medal round, their rotation will be that much stronger.

Outright Winner - Without USA: (Australia +250)
I know they have never won a medal, but this team is ready to explode on the international scene. It’s been a steady build of this program over the past decade. We see it with the increase in players making it to the NBA and even American prospects who went there to play ahead of the draft. Now we may see it on the biggest stage.
