Inaugural Road Race in Austin has Chase Elliott as Heavy Favorite

2021 EchoPark Texas Grand Prix NASCAR Cup Series Race Preview, Odds, Props and Predictions

Chase Elliott is a +250 favorite to win this week’s EchoPark Texas Grand Prix road race in Austin Texas and after a look at his recent results it’s not surprising at all.

He had won four straight road races before Christopher Bell (+1800) snapped his streak at this year’s Daytona road race.

A huge change is coming to NASCAR for this race which is that there will be a qualifying session to determine the race order. That is the first time since March that the circuit is doing it this way in yet another sign that the worst of Covid may be behind us, at least in the US.

That may also have a dramatic impact on who to choose this week. Thus far this season’s race order has been based on a system built on recent results, but that would penalize the some of the best road drivers who typically race for the smaller teams.

Now, they’ll have a chance to earn a starting position in the top-10 and that’s important considering that eight of the last ten road-coarse winners have come from there.

What’s also true is that seven of the last eight winners have been 26 or younger.

This is a 3.4 mile layout with 20 turns with an uphill climb into turn 1 that is sure to give some fits, especially if the weather prediction for a wet track holds.

In a race like this, the unpredictability factor increases and that means the chance for a big payday. That is reflected in the fact that only three drivers are below +1200 for this one.

Other favorites to consider include Martin Truex Jr. (+550) who has four road wins in his distinguished career and has been top-six in four of his last six.

I’m less keen on Denny Hamlin (+1200) this week. Even though he has finished top-five in eight of his last ten road races, he’s won just one road race in 33 career starts and is still looking for his first win this year.

Kyle Larson (+1000) week in, week out has the fastest car and he’s finished second the last two weeks. He’s also had some good results at Watkins Glen, the most comparable course to this when he was with Chip Ganassi with three top-eight results in six attempts and starting in the top-six five times.

AJ Allmendinger (+3000) is one driver who stands to benefit from a Sunday qualifying session. He’s one of the best road racers on the circuit and he’ll get plenty of practice since he’s taking part in the XFINITY Series race the night before.

Chase Briscoe (+8000) is a driver to look at if you want to go really long and/or as a top-three pick. He has road race wins on the XFINITY circuit and he’s in a pretty good car in a Stewart-Haas Ford.

Read on to see our pick for this week.
