2021 Indianapolis 500 IndyCar Series Race Preview, Odds, Props and Predictions

It’s called the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and this year the Indy 500 will return in front of an expected 135,000 fans. It’s not quite the 300,000 that usually gather for the race, but still in this Covid era that is quite something to have that many people in one place again.

The strong favorite to win this year’s race is Scott Dixon (+350). He’ll be racing from the pole after a strong runner up result in last year’s event where he led for 111 of the 200 laps. This year he’s off to a strong start with a victory and three more top-five results in the five races that have been held this season. That puts him at the top of the standings.

Just behind him in the standings is Alex Palou (+1400), but he is getting just the sixth best odds for this race. He’s got a win and two more top-five results this season. In his rookie season last year he placed 28th in the Indy 500.

Colton Herta (+600) is starting in the second position and getting strong odds as the second favorite. His car looks good here, but he’s not had good results in his first two attempts, finishing eighth and 33rd. But last season he finished top-five in seven of the 14 races on the circuit, including one win.

Tony Kanaan (+1500) is worth a look as he’s gone on record saying this is the strongest car he’s had at this event in years. During the lead up practice runs at the course he’s had four top-five results in five tries.

Rinus VeeKay (+1700) has a win this season -at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, is sixth in the standings and did well on this track last year in his rookie season. He had started on the pole in the Indycar Harvest and finished third in that race and started fourth in last year’s Indy 500 before finishing 20th. What’s more the last two times the Grand Prix of Indianapolis winner also started in the first row, he also drove away the winner here. VeeKay starts on the front row here in the third spot.

Takuma Sato (+1800) is the defending champion, but he’s got just two top-ten results this season and has yet to start a race in the top-ten. He’ll start 15th this Sunday. On the other hand, he did finish second in the final day of testing last month.

Among the long shots, a couple to consider include Santino Ferrucci (+5000) and Ed Jones (+6600).

Ferrucci has been great in his first two starts here, finishing seventh in 2019 and fourth last season. His RLLR racing team also features Sato and last year’s third place finisher Graham Rahal (+1700).

Jones is starting in the fourth row and he did finish third here in his rookie season in 2017.
