Rain and Bad Weather Could Play Havoc with this Week’s Tournament

2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic Preview, Golf Odds, Value Bet, Prop Bets and Predictions

This week the PGA heads to Detroit Michigan for the third ever Rocket Mortgage Classic. The defending champion is Bryson DeChambeau who burst onto the scene with his improved physique and game after the Covid pause to win here by three strokes.

In total only two of the top-ten golfers in the world will take part, with Patrick Reed being the other. At the same time 13 former major winner will join in the festivities including a first ever appearance for Lefty, Phil Michelson.

One thing all golfers may have to deal with are very soft greens and rain. Humid stormy weather is in the forecast all week in the area leading up to the tournament, including on day one, Thursday where there’s a 60% chance of thunderstorms being called for in the afternoon. That could favor the early players on the day.

DeChambeau was the favorite at last week’s Travelers Championship as well, but it was likely a reach to see him reach such heights just one week after his disastrous meltdown on the back-nine of the US Open. Still, he accorded himself well finishing seven under and tied for 19th.

Reed finished one shot back of DeChambeau at the Travelers which put him in a tie for 25th. It was his third straight top-25 result which included a fifth place finish at the Memorial. He’s had a top-25 result and four top-ten results in each of the eight tournaments he’s made the cut since late February, but he’s also missed the cut three times.

Matthew Wolf was the runner up at last year’s event and he gave DeChambeau a good run for his money, trailing by just one shot after the 15th hole, before his opponent put it out of reach with three straight birdies to win it. This year the 32nd ranked Wolf is just coming back to the tour after taking a couple months off. He finished t-15 at the US Open before missing the cut at the Travelers.

Keegan Bradley has missed the cut at his last two events, at the Travelers and the Memorial. It’s taken the shine off of what’s been a solid spring for the former major winner. He finished T17 at the PGA Championship, part of a string of seven straight top-30 results that included two top-ten finishes. He could be primed for a good bounce back this weekend.

Bubba Watson melted down towards the end of the Travelers to finish T19 after being the leader heading into the back-nine on Sunday. He’ll have a chance to put it behind him quickly if he can bounce back this weekend.

Brian Stuard would love to make his hometown fans happy as he went to school at nearby Oakland University. He knows the course well and posted top-30 results at the first two tournaments held here. He’s had a pretty solid 2021 with a T3 at the Safeway Open and two more top-20 results, most recently in May at the RBC Heritage.

Tom Lewis finished 12th in this tournament last year and will look to that experience to help erase what’s been a pretty dreadful spring. He finished 14th at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, but since then he’s missed the cut six times and finished 47th or lower five times.
