USA Looks to Avenge Loss to France, This Time for the Gold

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Men's Basketball Finals Game Odds, Betting Preview & Parlay Predictions

The USA had their 25-game Olympic winning streak snapped in the opening game of the tournament when they dropped an 83-75 decision to France. Now the two nations will go at it one more time, this time with a gold medal on the line.

It’s been fascinating to watch the USA in the elimination rounds against both Spain and Australia. Both games followed a similar script. Both of their opponents built double digit leads and the US looked vulnerable for most of the first half.

Late runs to close the gap brought the US back into the games and dominant performances on both ends of the floor in the third quarter sucked the life out of their opponents.

Kevin Durant has led the way in both games with stifling perimeter defense against the other teams’ best scorers and clutch shots that then create confidence and openings for his teammates.

France may be able to flip the script for the very simple reason, that they have something that neither Spain or Australia had. Talent- especially someone to match up properly with Durant.

Rudy Gobert anchors the French team, much the same way that Durant does for the US. He is a three-time defensive player of the year in the NBA, including this season, as well as a five-time defensive first team all-star.

If he plays the game of his life, let alone at a level he has shown for much of his career, then he should be able to slow down and possibly neutralize Durant.

Beyond that matchup, the US clearly has a talent advantage, but France does have two accomplished NBA players to help with the scoring including Evan Fournier and Nicolas Batum. And in their 89-88 victory over Slovenia it was EuroLeague star Nando de Colo leading the way with 25 points to along with five assists and seven rebounds.

He is also hitting a terrific 47% on his three-point attempts throughout the tournament.

If he can keep up those numbers against the likes of Jrue Holliday, Bam Adebayo and company then the French can give the Americans a real run for their money for four full quarters.

USA vs. France (NBC, Peacock, 10:30 pm ET)
USA -12½ O/U 175½

That is a huge spread in favor of the USA, but well deserved after the way they stormed back in each of their last two games. They have found a new gear and it is hard to see their opponents, able to keep up for four quarters. Still, I think France, led by Gobert has it in them to keep it close enough to cover another US victory.
The Pick: USA 92-83
France +12½ (-105) & Under 175½
