Usman takes on Masvidal in a Rematch of their Title Fight from Last Year

UFC 261 Usman vs Masvidal 2 Main Event Betting Odds, Prop Bets, Free Picks and Predictions

Kamaru Usman defeated Jorge Masvidal to claim the UFC welterweight championship last July. It was a clear and decisive unanimous decision. The win however came with a caveat as Masvidal was a last moment fill in when Gilbert Burns withdrew. As a result the challenger had just six days to make weight and get his mind right for the battle.

As a result he’s been granted a rematch, now it remains to be seen if those extra months will make enough of a difference.

The main event is one of three championship fights on the night and will be fought in front of an arena full of fans, one of the first since Covid began.

Main Event Prediction: Welterweights Kamaru Usman (-375) vs. Jorge Masvidal (+285)
The odds are stacked in Usman’s favor in part because he has one career loss to Masvidal’s 14. He is also three years younger and he has shown himself to be the class of the welterweight division.

Usman was last in the ring in February when he gave Burns his shot at the title. Usman KOed him 34 seconds into the third round.

Usman was once known as an elite grappler and wrestler, but now he is also showing terrific striking abilities in his fights. He appears to be getting stronger and better with age.

Masvidal’s last fight was against Usman and he’s a hard striker with a lot of experience. Usman only had five weeks to prepare for this fight instead of the usual which is at least 8-10 weeks, so the tables are somewhat turned. If Masvidal can take what he learned and fight a perfect match he does have a chance. But it’s doubtful.
The Pick: (Usman by Decision at -125)

Flyweight: Valentina Shevchenko (-450) vs. Jessiva Andrade (+325)
Shevchenko is the long-time queen of the division and has not lost since 2010. She has a three-inch height advantage, 4.5-inch reach advantage and is ten pounds heavier than Andrade.

Andrade has already come out and shared her strategy for a win is to emulate what Jennifer Maia did in Shevchenko’s last title defense. She just plans to do it better. Namely, it is to have an effective takedown to the ground and then do a better job of keeping her pinned once they get on the mat.

She wants to use her compact strength and frame to her advantage. She is also a former strawweight champion, so she does know what it takes to get to the top.

Shevchenko’s striking game is second to none and she is an extremely powerful and deceptive kicker. Her kicks have taken down many opponents with one good point of contact.

This is Andrade’s second flyweight fight after getting a TKO win over Katlyn Chookagian last October. I think she’ll be in for a rude awakening here.
The Pick: (Shevchenko by KO at +225 & +1400 in a 3rd round KO)

Strawweight: Zhang Weili (-210) vs Rose Namajunas (+170)
It’s the current champ Zhang versus the former champion Namajunas in the last of the three championship fights on Saturday night.

Zhang took the title in a convincing first round fight stoppage over Andrade. That fight was 20 months ago. Last year she emerged with a split decision from a violent fight over former champ, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. It was the 21st straight victory for the 31-year-old. 10 of those have been by knockout and seven more by submission. Only four have gone to a decision.

Namajunas was a huge underdog when she dethroned Jedrzejczyk to take the championship back in 2017. It was talked about as one of the biggest upset wins in the history of the sport, but she showed it was no fluke when she beat her a second time one year later.

She lost the title to Andrade in 2019 who then lost the title to Zhang. But Namajunas fought Andrade in the latter’s last strawweight fight last July and beat her in a split decision.

The challenger is 9-4 in MMA with one knockout win and five by submission.

She is an extremely strong technical fighter with a complete, albeit less powerful toolbox than the champ.

Zhang is considered the third best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport and I think she will further prove it here.
The Pick: (Zhang by decision at +160)
