Game Preview

In previous seasons, losing a second game by mid-October would have severely damaged a team’s playoff chances. However, with the introduction of the 12-team playoff format this year, a second loss isn’t a dealbreaker. That’s promising for No. 7 Alabama and No. 11 Tennessee, who meet this Saturday in Knoxville.

While the stakes remain high, the winner still has a shot at securing one of the four first-round byes. Tennessee (5-1, 2-1 SEC) looks to turn the tide in a series where they’ve lost 16 of the last 17 games, including a 52-49 thriller two years ago when Alabama (5-1, 2-1) last visited.

“This is a huge rivalry, and it doesn’t get much better than this,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said. “We’re going to need a great week of practice as we face a strong team.”

This game will be Alabama’s first matchup against Tennessee without Nick Saban since 2006. First-year Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer has felt the weight of this rivalry since he arrived.

“I know this is a big deal, and the players are motivated,” DeBoer said.

Alabama hasn’t been at its best lately, losing to Vanderbilt two weeks ago and narrowly escaping South Carolina last week, 27-25. Star quarterback Jalen Milroe has been a bright spot, accounting for 23 touchdowns this season, but his two interceptions last week prompted a conversation with DeBoer about cutting down on mistakes.

On the other side, Tennessee boasts one of the nation’s top defenses, ranking second in total defense (249.8 yards per game) and fourth in scoring defense (10.7 points per game). However, they suffered a setback with linebacker Keenan Pili out for the season due to a knee injury.

Tennessee’s offense shines through running back Dylan Sampson, who has rushed for 699 yards and 15 touchdowns, the second most in the nation. He rushed for 112 yards and three scores in last week’s 23-17 overtime win over Florida, marking his fifth 100-yard game this season.
