Game Preview

Manny Machado saw a one-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth as manageable, despite the San Diego Padres having blown a 7-2 lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

"It’s just one run," Machado said. "We’ve been in worse situations before and come back."

True to his confidence, San Diego rallied for a 10-8 victory, capped by Machado’s two-run walk-off homer. This sets up the Padres with a chance to secure their fifth consecutive series win on Saturday in the second game of the three-game series.

"It just shows the character of this team," he said of their resilience. "We never stop fighting. It was awesome to have that happy ending."

Lately, the Padres have made a habit of dramatic finishes at Petco Park, winning 10 of their last 11 home games, with five of those victories coming via walk-offs. Machado’s homer marked their fourth walk-off home run since June 11.

San Diego’s success has been powered by their offense, averaging over six runs per game while winning 12 of their last 15 games, climbing to a season-high six games over .500. They lead MLB with 33 innings of at least four runs and are tied for seventh with 104 home runs.

With seven players hitting at least 10 homers, the Padres have the firepower to overcome pitching flaws. They’ll look for a strong outing from right-hander Matt Waldron (5-7, 3.56 ERA), who is set to start on Saturday.
