Game Preview

Philadelphia Phillies’ ace Aaron Nola has the chance to set the record for the most wins at Citizens Bank Park when he faces the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night in the final game of their four-game series.

Nola, currently tied with ex-Phillie Cole Hamels, each have 56 wins at the venue which has been the Phillies’ home since 2004.

Philadelphia (80-56) secured another series win with Saturday’s 3-0 shutout against the Braves, solidifying their lead atop the National League East, now six games ahead of Atlanta (74-62).

Nola (12-6, 3.30 ERA) comes off a commanding seven-inning shutout performance against the Houston Astros last Tuesday, earning him his 102nd career win and moving him into seventh place on the Phillies’ all-time wins list, surpassing Curt Schilling.

"It’s an honor," Nola said, reflecting on surpassing Schilling. "But my focus remains on contributing to our team’s success."

This victory broke a stretch of seven starts without a win for Nola, despite posting a solid 2.70 ERA in August. He finished strong against Houston, retiring the last nine batters he faced.

Houston’s manager Joe Espada praised Nola’s resilience, noting, "He effectively managed the game and made key pitches under pressure."

Nola’s last matchup against the Braves on August 21 ended without a decision; he allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a tight 3-2 Phillies’ win.

Over his career, Nola has faced Atlanta 36 times, amassing a record of 16-11 with a 3.60 ERA.

On the mound for the Braves will be rookie Spencer Schwellenbach (5-6, 3.72 ERA), who comes into the game after a scoreless 4 2/3-inning stint against the Minnesota Twins last Tuesday. Despite requiring 106 pitches to secure those outs, due to eight strikeouts and three walks, Schwellenbach felt positive about his performance.

"I aimed to vary my pitches and locations, which extended my outing more than I would’ve liked, but overall, I executed well," Schwellenbach reflected.

He has already recorded two wins against Philadelphia this season, including a victory on August 22 where he allowed just two runs over nearly seven innings, at one point retiring 19 consecutive batters.

Schwellenbach also secured a win over the Phillies on July 6, allowing one run across six innings in a 5-1 Braves’ triumph.
