Game Preview
The Atlanta Braves are aiming for their first four-game road sweep over the San Francisco Giants in 68 years as they conclude their season series on Thursday afternoon.
Entering the series with just a 1 1/2-game separation, the Braves had struggled, losing seven of their last eight games, while the Giants had gained ground with four wins in five outings to narrow the NL wild-card race.
However, the Braves have rallied with extra-inning RBIs from Travis d’Arnaud on Monday and Tuesday, and Michael Harris II’s grand slam in the first inning on Wednesday, leading to three straight victories over the Giants.
The last time the Braves managed a four-game road sweep over the Giants was in June 1956, when the team was based in Milwaukee and played in New York. Hank Aaron was the Braves’ right fielder, and Willie Mays was the Giants’ center fielder.
Harris, returning from a hamstring injury, had a standout game on Wednesday, hitting a career-high five RBIs and his first grand slam into McCovey Cove. He expressed his excitement about being back, likening it to the first day of school.
Jorge Soler, who started the season with the Giants, left Wednesday’s game in the fourth inning due to hamstring tightness and will miss Thursday’s game, pending an MRI. Jarred Kelenic replaced Soler and contributed with a two-run double.
Kelenic is expected to face Giants’ right-hander Logan Webb (10-8, 3.32 ERA) on Thursday. Webb has been stellar in his last three starts, going 3-0 with a 0.83 ERA. He previously limited the Braves to two runs over seven innings in a 4-2 win on July 4 and holds a 3-1 record with a 2.98 ERA in seven career starts against Atlanta.
Despite the recent loss, Giants manager Bob Melvin remains optimistic, noting the team’s ability to bounce back. He stressed the need to get back to .500 on Thursday before taking an off day to regroup.
For the Giants to secure a win, they must overcome Braves’ left-hander Max Fried (7-6, 3.56 ERA), who is 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA in eight career starts against San Francisco. Fried, who has struggled in two starts since returning from a forearm injury, has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) and walked eight in 8 1/3 innings.
