Game Preview
As the Baltimore Orioles aim to secure the American League’s top record, the Miami Marlins are looking to disrupt the postseason plans of contenders. The two teams are set to meet Tuesday night as Baltimore kicks off a three-game series in Miami.
The Orioles arrive after a successful series against the Texas Rangers, where they captured two out of three games, followed by a rest day on Monday. In their recent matchup, Baltimore clinched two decisive wins but stumbled in a narrow 3-2 loss on Sunday, marred by Jonah Heim’s three-run homer in the fourth inning for Texas.
Looking to rebound, the Orioles will send right-hander Albert Suarez (5-3, 2.82 ERA) to the mound for his 20th appearance and 13th start this season. Suarez, who hasn’t pitched since before the All-Star break, is coming off a July 11 loss to the Chicago Cubs where he allowed four runs over five innings, halting a two-start winning streak.
Tuesday’s game will be Suarez’s first start against Miami and his second overall appearance, his first being a three-inning relief stint in August 2017 with the San Francisco Giants, where he allowed three runs.
Having been out of the majors from 2018 to 2023, Suarez has become an important part of an Orioles rotation dealing with the loss of Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells to Tommy John surgery this season.
Despite these challenges, Baltimore leads the AL East, fueled by a powerful offense that has hit a major-league-leading 157 home runs. Anthony Santander has been a significant contributor, hitting three homers in Texas to start the second half, bringing his total to 27 for the season.
