Game Preview

The New York Mets are about to face a tougher schedule, and that might be exactly what they need to stay in the National League wild-card race.

The Mets will kick off a critical stretch on Monday night as they host the Baltimore Orioles for the first game of a three-game interleague series. David Peterson (7-1, 3.04 ERA) will take the mound for New York, facing left-hander Trevor Rogers (2-11, 4.89) from Baltimore.

Both teams are in the midst of a grueling 13-game stretch without a day off. The Mets missed a chance to sweep the Miami Marlins after a 3-2 defeat, while the Orioles managed to salvage a split of their four-game series with a 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Following their loss and a 3-1 victory by the Braves on Sunday, the Mets find themselves two games behind Atlanta for the final NL wild-card spot. The series against the Orioles kicks off a 10-game stretch where New York will face teams currently in playoff positions.

After the Orioles, the Mets will embark on a road trip featuring four games against the San Diego Padres and three against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are also in the wild-card hunt.

Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who is scheduled for an MRI on Monday after leaving Sunday’s game with a sore right shoulder, noted the intensity of facing playoff-contending teams. “When you play teams that are in it, every pitch matters,” Nimmo said. “It’s going to be more like playoff baseball.”

The Orioles are also entering a challenging stretch. After facing the Mets, they will host the AL West-leading Houston Astros for four games and then head to Los Angeles for a series against the NL West-leading Dodgers.

Since July 1, the Orioles have faced just 10 games against playoff-bound teams. They lost series to the Yankees and Padres but managed to split a four-game set with the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians.

All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman provided a much-needed spark on Sunday with a home run that broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. It was his first home run since July 19, and he had been sidelined on Friday due to lower back issues.

Peterson, who earned a win last Wednesday by allowing one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings in a 9-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics, has a 1-1 record with a 3.72 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Orioles.

Rogers, who has struggled since joining the Orioles from the Marlins, took a loss last Tuesday after giving up five runs over five-plus innings in a 9-3 defeat to the Washington Nationals. He is winless with a 7.53 ERA in three starts with Baltimore. Rogers holds a 2-3 record with a 3.35 ERA in nine career starts against the Mets.
