Game Preview

The Baltimore Orioles are set to welcome back left-hander Cole Irvin as he makes an unexpected return to the rotation on Wednesday afternoon against the New York Mets in the final game of their three-game interleague series.

Irvin (6-5, 4.85 ERA) will be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to face Mets lefty Sean Manaea (9-5, 3.46). This comes after the Orioles celebrated a 9-5 victory on Tuesday, where Anthony Santander and James McCann both hit home runs. Despite squandering a six-run lead, the Orioles managed to secure the win with solid late-inning performances from Yennier Cano and Craig Kimbrel.

The day started off poorly for Baltimore, as they placed Zach Eflin—originally slated to start Wednesday—on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Eflin had been instrumental, winning all four of his starts since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 26. He joins Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells, John Means, and Kyle Bradish on the injured list, with the latter three out for the season due to elbow surgeries.

"Replacing these key players is tough, but it’s up to us to step up," said Dean Kremer, who pitched six strong innings on Tuesday. Irvin, who hasn’t seen action since July 29, pitched well in two starts at Norfolk, posting a 4.05 ERA.

Irvin’s record against the Mets isn’t strong, as he is 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA in four appearances (one start). Meanwhile, the Mets faced their own challenges on Tuesday, as Jose Quintana struggled, allowing seven runs in five innings. Despite his recent difficulties, manager Carlos Mendoza indicated that Quintana’s place in the rotation is secure due to a lack of depth.

Manaea, who recently earned a win against the Miami Marlins, will look to improve on his previous struggles against the Orioles, where he has an ERA of 16.88 in two career starts.
