Game Preview
After reclaiming sole possession of first place in the American League East with a dominant performance on Friday, the Baltimore Orioles will turn to ace Corbin Burnes on Saturday to secure their series win over the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Orioles took a half-game lead over the New York Yankees with a 4-1 win in the series opener. Zach Eflin, who allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings, led the charge, with Colton Cowser and Cedric Mullins each hitting a home run. The team also showcased impressive defensive plays from shortstop Gunnar Henderson and third baseman Ramon Urias.
Baltimore, now 4-4 on their season-high 10-game road trip, has won seven of their eight games against the Rays this season.
“That was one of our most satisfying games in a while due to the pitching and defense,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “It was a return to the high-quality baseball we played earlier in the season.”
Eflin, acquired from the Rays on July 26, improved to 3-0 in three starts since joining the Orioles. His performance against his former team was described as "textbook pitching" by Hyde.
Burnes (12-4, 2.63 ERA), who is contending for his second Cy Young Award, will aim to tie for the major league lead in wins. He previously faced Tampa Bay on June 10, allowing two unearned runs in seven innings during a 5-2 victory.
The Rays, who are five games behind the Kansas City Royals for the final AL wild-card spot, will start right-hander Drew Rasmussen (0-0, 0.00 ERA) as an opener. Rasmussen, making his first major league appearance since May 11, 2023, had a strong debut on Wednesday and has a 2-0 record with a 2.13 ERA in six career appearances against Baltimore.
