Game Preview

No. 13 Baylor, riding a three-game win streak, is finding its rhythm after a slow season start and will face its biggest test yet against No. 22 St. John’s on Thursday night in the Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, The Bahamas.

The tournament format includes a potential showdown with the winner of Virginia vs. No. 11 Tennessee for Friday’s championship game, while the first-round losers will meet in a consolation matchup.

Baylor Building Momentum
The Bears (3-1) head into the tournament fresh off a dominant 104-41 home win over Tarleton State. Jalen Celestine led with 20 points, and standout freshman VJ Edgecombe contributed 17. Baylor’s fast start included a scorching 67% shooting rate in the first half and a 43-point halftime lead.

"We wanted to start strong, and going 9 of 13 from 3 was exactly what we needed," said Baylor coach Scott Drew. Despite easing off in the second half, the Bears’ defensive intensity forced 28 turnovers, converting them into 46 points.

After a rocky 38-point loss to then-No. 6 Gonzaga in the season opener, Baylor has rebounded with wins against No. 16 Arkansas and two mid-major opponents, showcasing their potential as a contender.

St. John’s: A Promising Start
The Red Storm (4-0) head to the Bahamas on the back of a home victory, defeating New Mexico 85-71. RJ Luis Jr. was the standout, registering 21 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, helping St. John’s stay undefeated under coach Rick Pitino.

"We have the potential for greatness," Pitino said. "Right now, we’re solid, but we’re building chemistry with all new players."

Deivon Smith added 15 points, including 12 in the first half, while Kadary Richmond delivered a well-rounded performance with 14 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Aaron Scott and Zuby Ejiofor combined for 27 points and 18 rebounds, solidifying St. John’s inside presence.

Betting Insights
This clash pits Baylor’s efficient offense and high-pressure defense against St. John’s balanced attack and rebounding edge. Baylor’s ability to dominate early and force turnovers will be crucial, while St. John’s depth and potential under Pitino make them a formidable opponent. Expect a close contest as these two top-25 teams aim to make a statement in Nassau.
