Game Preview

The Buffalo Bills’ matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday is one of the standout games in Week 5 of the NFL season, especially with Stefon Diggs facing his former team.

Diggs played for the Bills from 2020 to 2023, recording at least 103 receptions each year and scoring 37 touchdowns. However, after a shift to a more run-focused offense late last season, he expressed frustration over his diminished role. The Bills traded Diggs to Houston on April 3, along with two late-round picks, in exchange for a second-round pick and absorbed $31 million in dead salary cap—an NFL record for a wide receiver trade.

So far this season, Diggs has been a key asset for second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud, with 25 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown. His presence has allowed younger receivers like Nico Collins to thrive; Collins leads the league with 489 receiving yards.

"Diggs is a smart player who can play multiple positions, allowing us to create favorable matchups," said Texans coach DeMeco Ryans. "He has some of the best hands I’ve seen, and his versatility really opens up our playbook."

Last week, Diggs caught five passes for 69 yards in a 24-20 victory over Jacksonville, helping the Texans maintain their lead in the AFC South. In contrast, the Bills (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season, falling 35-10 to Baltimore. Derrick Henry dominated the game for the Ravens, rushing for 199 yards and two touchdowns, while Buffalo’s offense struggled, gaining only 236 total yards.

The Bills’ defense took another hit on Wednesday when linebacker Von Miller was suspended for four games due to a personal conduct policy violation. Miller, the active leader in career sacks, was tied for the team lead this season with three sacks.

"We have to move forward, and I’m proud of how the guys have stepped up through various challenges," said Bills coach Sean McDermott. "They’ve dealt with injuries and now Miller’s suspension, so I expect them to keep pushing."

Middle linebacker Terrel Bernard, who missed the last two games with a pectoral injury, returned to practice this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday. However, leading receiver Khalil Shakir and several other key players have been ruled out for the game.

The Texans have ruled out running back Joe Mixon and defensive linemen Derek Barnett, Jerry Hughes, and Kurt Hinish, while running back Dameon Pierce is among six players listed as questionable.

On a positive note, receiver Tank Dell, who missed last week’s game due to bruised ribs, fully practiced on Friday and is expected to play. The teams have split their previous ten regular-season meetings, with Buffalo winning their last encounter 40-0 three years ago.
