Game Preview

Aaron Rodgers was brought in to turn the New York Jets from perennial underachievers into contenders. However, the team’s rocky start hasn’t inspired much confidence in snapping their 13-year playoff drought.

That rough beginning led to head coach Robert Saleh’s firing on Tuesday. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich will take over as the Jets face a critical AFC East matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night in East Rutherford, N.J.

Following back-to-back losses to the Broncos and Vikings, the Jets (2-3) made the coaching shift, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was relieved of play-calling duties, handing them to passing game coordinator Todd Downing for the Bills game.

Rodgers admitted the players share responsibility for the change.

“We have to make the most of this opportunity," Rodgers said. "When something like this happens, it’s a wake-up call for everyone.”

Rodgers, now 40, also recognizes the need to step up his own performance. He’s completed only 61% of his passes, thrown for 1,093 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions, while being sacked 13 times.

Last week’s 23-17 loss to the Vikings saw Rodgers toss three of those interceptions.

With the offense ranking 25th in points and 27th in total yards, Rodgers emphasized the urgency to improve under Ulbrich, the defensive coordinator now stepping into the top job.

“The pressure’s on us players," Rodgers said. "You can change coaches, but we’re the ones playing. We need to back ‘Brick’ and play better."

Ulbrich, who played 10 years as a linebacker with the 49ers, has been with the Jets since 2021. Now leading the team, he expressed confidence in a renewed energy for Monday’s game.

On the other side, the Bills (3-2) are also facing challenges, with back-to-back losses to the Ravens and Texans. Star quarterback Josh Allen struggled in last week’s 23-20 defeat to Houston, completing just 9 of 30 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown.

“I’ve got to be better," Allen said. "It starts with me."

Bills coach Sean McDermott remains confident in Allen, calling his struggles part of the normal ups and downs of a season.

Buffalo ranks third in scoring but sits 22nd in total offense. Key players like receiver Khalil Shakir (ankle) and running back James Cook (toe) are questionable for Monday. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) will miss his second straight game.

The Jets are also managing injuries, with cornerback Michael Carter II (back) ruled out. However, standout linebacker C.J. Mosley (toe) is expected to return, and right tackle Morgan Moses (knee) is slated to play after missing two games. Rodgers (ankle) is fully cleared.

Buffalo has dominated the recent rivalry, winning six of the last eight matchups.
