Game Preview

SMU is set to continue its high-scoring trend this season, bolstered by an effective defense that has been providing the offense with advantageous field positions and additional possessions through turnovers.

This formula contributed to a dominant 59-7 victory over FCS team Houston Christian, marking a promising start (2-0) for the Mustangs in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their next challenge arrives Friday night in Dallas, where they will face a potentially sterner opponent in BYU.

Last week, SMU’s defense didn’t just limit their opponents to 157 total yards; it also scored directly from a turnover when 348-pound nose tackle Anthony Booker returned a fumble 16 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Mustangs ahead 28-0 in the first quarter.

"Turnovers can drastically alter the dynamics of the game, shortening the field and even putting points on the board, which significantly eases the pressure on everyone," stated Mustangs coach Rhett Lashlee.

The Mustangs capitalized on three turnovers, converting each into touchdowns. This bolstered an offense that had already accumulated 595 total yards, featuring two touchdown passes from Preston Slone and 108 rushing yards from Brashard Smith.

Conversely, BYU kicked off its campaign with a convincing 41-13 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday night. Jake Retzlaff led the charge with a career-high 348 passing yards and three touchdowns, showcasing a level of physicality that was often missing last season when the Cougars went 5-7.

BYU’s coach, Kalani Sitake, now in his ninth year, expressed satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance and overall execution. "This was an excellent initial step towards achieving our overall defensive goals," he commented. "I am quite pleased with how we competed."

The Cougars amassed 527 total yards and maintained possession for over 39 minutes, demonstrating both efficiency and control.

"We understand our strengths and have confidence in our team identity," Retzlaff remarked.

BYU aims to maintain its undefeated record against SMU, having edged out the Mustangs 24-23 in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl, part of a historical 4-0 series lead.
