Utah Mammoth Outlook
Scoring goals has been tougher for the Mammoth than finding a parking spot at Costco on a Saturday. Five goals in three games? That’s not exactly the stat line of a juggernaut, it’s more like a cry for help.
Center Barrett Hayton summed it up perfectly, admitting the Mammoth have been softer around the net than a marshmallow in a sauna. The team’s biggest challenge? Actually getting inside the danger zone instead of orbiting around it like nervous satellites.
Coach Andre Tourigny did find one positive: Utah finally managed to forecheck without looking like a rec league squad. The Mammoth held Chicago to just 14 shots last game, which is impressive until you remember they only scored once themselves. Defense wins championships, sure, but not when the offense is auditioning for a nap.
The injury bug hasn’t helped either, Sean Durzi is out for a month, and Utah is forced to rely on depth players whose names even the announcers double-check. Still, winger Dylan Guenther continues to deliver points like a man trying to justify his paycheck, and new addition J.J. Peterka at least scored his first goal. If Utah can score twice, the city might throw a parade.
Calgary Flames Outlook
The Flames started hot this season, one win and then three straight lessons in humility. After blowing a 2-0 lead to Vegas on Tuesday, Calgary has now been outscored 9-1 in the third period during their losing streak. That’s not a collapse; that’s a full-blown implosion.
Blake Coleman didn’t sugarcoat it either. According to him, the team took its foot off the gas when they were up, and Vegas happily drove right past them. Calgary plays like a team that forgets hockey games have three periods, not two.
Backup goalie Devin Cooley likely gets the start, and the poor guy’s career numbers look like a fire drill. Maybe he surprises everyone, maybe he doesn’t, either way, buckle up.
Mikael Backlund did hit a career milestone, passing a Hall of Famer on the team’s all-time goals list. That’s the good news. The bad news? He might need to score again, possibly twice, to cover for the Flames’ ongoing defensive meltdowns.
Prediction
Both teams are allergic to scoring, but Utah at least knows how to play defense without immediately regretting it. Calgary’s exhaustion from a back-to-back and late-game collapses make them a risky pick on the road. Expect a scrappy, low-event affair with plenty of missed shots, failed clears, and goalies wondering why they ever chose this profession.
