Game Preview
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes have already had some memorable moments this season, and they’ll be looking for more when they face off Friday night in Pittsburgh.
The Penguins come into the game with back-to-back wins, including a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, highlighted by captain Sidney Crosby’s game-winning goal. Pittsburgh has netted six goals in each of their three wins so far, with Evgeni Malkin reaching a major milestone by scoring his 500th career goal, all with the Penguins.
Malkin expressed his gratitude for the support he’s received from fans in Pittsburgh, saying, "It’s always a pleasure to play here, and I’m thankful for the support." His third-period goal against Buffalo was his second of the season and helped set the stage for Crosby’s overtime heroics. Crosby is now just seven goals away from reaching 600 for his career.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan praised the bond between Crosby and Malkin, saying their history of winning Stanley Cups together has strengthened their relationship.
The Hurricanes are starting a six-game road trip, an annual occurrence while the North Carolina State Fair occupies their home arena. They come off a 4-1 home win against the New Jersey Devils, with defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, in his second stint with Carolina, scoring one of the goals. Rookie Jackson Blake also notched his first NHL goal, while Seth Jarvis scored his first since signing a big contract extension in the offseason.
Gostisbehere views the road trip as an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their game, saying, "It’s good to play our way and stick to our system, but we still have areas to clean up."
One area Carolina is focused on improving is special teams, after giving up three power-play goals in their first two games. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour stressed the importance of execution, saying, "Special teams come down to being one step ahead."
Carolina excelled on the road last season, ranking among the league’s best with a 25-13-3 record and the top road power-play percentage.
Friday’s game will also mark the return of former Hurricanes Michael Bunting and goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, now playing for Pittsburgh. It’s the Penguins’ final home game before heading out for a four-game road trip. The two teams will meet again on November 7 in Carolina.
