Game Preview
Despite a solid 4-2 record, the Washington Commanders feel they haven’t reached their full potential yet.
Their next opportunity to improve comes Sunday as they host the Carolina Panthers in Landover, Md.
“The focus is on us,” said Commanders coach Dan Quinn. “We have plenty to work on, and we’re going to sharpen our game as much as possible.”
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick, has impressed in his first six games. He leads the league in completion percentage (75.3%) and has rushed for 322 yards, ranking second among quarterbacks.
“We have a great quarterback in Jayden,” Quinn said. “I love what he brings to our team.”
For the Panthers, it’s their second consecutive road game against a standout rookie QB. Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns against Carolina in their recent 36-10 loss. Last week, the Panthers fell to the Atlanta Falcons, 38-20.
Carolina coach Dave Canales acknowledges the challenge of facing Daniels, a dual-threat QB with six passing touchdowns and four rushing scores. Canales emphasized tight secondary coverage as key to limiting Daniels’ impact.
“Jayden’s been making plays and growing each game,” Canales said.
Daniels is hopeful running back Brian Robinson Jr. will return after missing last week’s game with a knee injury. Robinson is questionable, having been limited in practice.
“It’s going to help having B-Rob back with his ability to break tackles,” Daniels said.
Washington seeks its first 5-2 start since 2018, coming off a 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Meanwhile, the Panthers (1-5) are on a three-game losing streak and sit at the bottom of the NFC.
Carolina’s bright spot is running back Chuba Hubbard, third in the league with 485 rushing yards. Veteran QB Andy Dalton has thrown for 896 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions over four starts since replacing Bryce Young.
Quinn, in his first year with Washington, is familiar with Carolina from his days coaching the Atlanta Falcons.
“They do a good job with their run game and play-action,” Quinn said, noting Dalton’s stabilizing effect on the Panthers’ offense.
Both teams are dealing with key injuries. Washington will be without defensive tackle Jonathan Allen (pectoral) for the rest of the season and placed defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste on injured reserve. Carolina will miss several key players, including linebackers Claudin Cherelus and Jon Rhattigan, along with offensive tackle Taylor Moton and running back Jonathon Brooks.
The Commanders lead the all-time series against the Panthers 10-7, including a 6-3 record at home.
