Game Preview
The Calgary Flames look to stay undefeated when they face off against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
The Flames have started the season with three consecutive victories, most recently beating their rival Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. Last year, Calgary didn’t secure a three-game win streak until mid-December.
"It’s important to start strong," said forward Jonathan Huberdeau. "Last season, we dug ourselves into a hole, so getting some early wins and feeling good is what we needed."
Huberdeau has been a key contributor alongside linemates Anthony Mantha and Martin Pospisil. Huberdeau is tied for the team lead with five points (three goals, two assists), while Pospisil also has five points (one goal, four assists), and Mantha has four points (two goals, two assists).
"What makes our line work is how we complement each other," said Mantha. "Huby is one of the best passers in the world, and Pospy’s work ethic creates room for the rest of us."
Huberdeau is determined to bounce back from the decline he experienced in his first two seasons with Calgary after his 115-point breakout in 2021-22 with Florida. He posted 55 points in his first year with the Flames and 52 last season.
"You build from a strong start," Huberdeau said after recording two goals and two assists in a recent win over the Flyers. "Nights like that help the confidence, and I want to keep going up from here."
The Blackhawks head to Calgary after picking up their first win of the season, beating the Oilers 5-2 on Saturday. That win followed a 2-1 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets, earning Chicago points in back-to-back games after their season-opening loss.
"Our team wants to be better after last season’s disappointment," said Bedard. "The Flames are proving people wrong so far, and we’re both fired up heading into the game."
Bedard had a goal and two assists against Edmonton, bringing his total to five points (one goal, four assists), tied with Teuvo Teravainen (two goals, two assists) for the team lead.
After two tough seasons near the bottom of the NHL standings, the Blackhawks strengthened their roster with key additions this summer, aiming to improve.
"We want to frustrate teams and be tough to play against," Bedard added. "That’s our identity—keep it simple, but we have the skill to make plays when the opportunity comes."
