Game Preview
Both the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks are looking to bounce back after disappointing performances following the Olympic break.
The Sky, aiming for their fifth straight win over the Sparks, visit Los Angeles on Saturday. Chicago (10-15) ended the Olympic hiatus with a strong 93-85 victory over the Las Vegas Aces but struggled in their return game, shooting 37% in an 85-65 home defeat to Phoenix. The loss marked their first game without Marina Mabrey, who was traded to Connecticut. Chicago’s poor shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, contributed to their downfall as they were outscored 30-12 in the opening quarter.
Despite the recent loss, Chicago remains in the eighth and final playoff spot. "We have to focus on ourselves," said Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon. Rookie standout Angel Reese recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.
The Sky have dominated the Sparks recently, winning four straight matchups, including three by margins of at least eight points.
On the other hand, the Sparks (6-19) have struggled, losing 12 of their last 14 games. Their recent 103-68 defeat to New York was marked by poor shooting and a rough start, as they trailed 29-10 after the first quarter. Rae Burrell and Dearica Hamby were among the few bright spots for Los Angeles, with Burrell scoring 15 points and Hamby adding a double-double.
Sparks coach Curt Miller expressed disappointment, saying, "This isn’t what the Sparks are about on their home court. We need to move forward." Los Angeles has averaged only 74 points per game during their four-game home losing streak.
It remains uncertain if Chicago’s leading scorer, Chennedy Carter, will return after missing Thursday’s game due to a non-COVID illness.
