Game Preview
Keider Montero earned his first major league victory in his most recent start and aims to continue his success as the Detroit Tigers open a four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday evening, kicking off a seven-game homestand.
The rookie right-hander has made three major league starts, lasting 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday, where he allowed two runs and six hits in Detroit’s 9-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
At 24, Montero has also pitched in 13 games for Triple-A Toledo this season, posting a 1-4 record with a 5.03 ERA. He was called up to the Tigers after Jack Flaherty (back) missed a start and Casey Mize (hamstring) was placed on the injured list.
"I’ve always believed in the process, and in the end, the results would show," Montero said through an interpreter. "The most important part is I was able to help the team get a win." This will be Montero’s first time facing the Guardians.
Montero (1-2, 6.60 ERA) has struggled with control issues in the minors, issuing 30 walks in 48 1/3 innings, but gave up only one free pass against the Twins.
"He’s got a good heater, and he kept them off-balance. I’m excited to see what he can develop into," said Tigers catcher Carson Kelly.
