Game Preview

August has been a standout month for Cleveland Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez.

Giménez is hitting .333 with 16 hits in 48 at-bats through 13 games this month. He’ll look to continue his hot streak as the Guardians kick off a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

Cleveland enjoyed a day off on Thursday after Giménez contributed significantly to a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, notching three hits and three RBIs. His performance marked his fifth multi-hit game of August.

"He’s been tremendous for us," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. "When he’s focused on driving the ball, he’s at his best. His clutch hits were crucial in our win on Wednesday."

Giménez’s contributions have helped Cleveland average 4.8 runs per game during their current five-game winning streak.

Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (2-4, 4.38 ERA) will make his ninth start of the season on Friday, looking for additional run support. Williams secured a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins in his last outing, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings.

Vogt praised Williams’ preparation and attitude before that game, noting a distinct positive change in his demeanor.

Williams has yet to face the Brewers in his career.

The Brewers will counter with right-hander Aaron Civale (3-8, 5.02 ERA), who recently earned a win against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 9. Civale allowed two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings in that game.

Civale, who began his major league career with the Guardians before moving to Tampa Bay and then Milwaukee, is 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA in six starts for the Brewers. In his previous appearance against the Guardians, he allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings but did not receive a decision.

The Brewers are buoyed by a 6-4 come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. Jackson Chourio was a standout performer, hitting a two-run homer and a double. Since the All-Star break, Chourio has been impressive, batting .365 with six home runs and 18 RBIs.

With a nine-game lead in the National League Central and just 41 games remaining, Milwaukee is focusing on their playoff aspirations. Despite their strong position, hitting coach Ozzie Timmons emphasizes that the team isn’t getting ahead of itself.

The Brewers have shown resilience, coming from behind to win the final two games of their series against the Dodgers, including a 5-4 victory on Wednesday after trailing 3-0.

"We just keep going," said Brewers first baseman/designated hitter Jake Bauers. "As cliché as it sounds, it’s crucial for us."
