Game Preview

The Minnesota Twins are narrowing the gap with the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central lead and hope to close within half a game on Saturday.

Following a doubleheader sweep over the Guardians on Friday, the Twins are now just 1.5 games behind the division leaders. They won the first game 4-2 and the second 6-3.

Twins pitcher Louie Varland humorously mentioned his gratitude for teammates Matt Wallner and Cole Sands after their key contributions in the nightcap. Wallner hit a three-run homer, and Sands earned the win in relief, while Varland pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs.

The Guardians are looking to end a seven-game losing streak and improve their fortunes on Saturday. Gavin Williams (1-4, 4.91 ERA) will make his eighth start of the season, aiming to rebound from a poor performance against the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday.

Williams has a solid track record against the Twins, with a 1.50 ERA in two career starts against them.

The Twins will counter with Simeon Woods Richardson (3-2, 3.87 ERA), who seeks his first win since June 26. Woods Richardson is coming off a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox and has previously held the Guardians to one run in 5 1/3 innings during a prior outing.

The Twins are pursuing their third consecutive win despite losing pitchers Joe Ryan and Brock Stewart to the injured list. Ryan’s season might be over due to a right teres major strain, while Stewart is set for season-ending shoulder surgery. Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase also aims to edge closer to the franchise save record, currently standing at 143 saves.
