Game Preview
The New York Yankees are engaged in a fierce battle for the American League East title with the Baltimore Orioles, while the Cleveland Guardians are feeling pressure as their lead in the AL Central diminishes.
Both teams will look to enhance their standings when they kick off a three-game series in New York on Tuesday night.
Earlier this season, the Yankees took two out of three from the Guardians in Cleveland and currently hold a slight edge at .584, just three percentage points ahead of Cleveland. The Yankees have improved to 13-7 in their last 20 games after struggling with a 10-23 record from mid-June to late July, but they have had mixed results against teams with losing records, going 8-7 during that stretch.
After a 10-run performance against the Chicago White Sox, the Yankees struggled offensively over the weekend, scoring just five runs in a series against the Detroit Tigers, resulting in a two out of three loss.
The Yankees split the first two games against Detroit before heading to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League Classic, where they suffered a tough 3-2 loss in 10 innings after Clay Holmes, who leads the majors in blown saves, surrendered a late lead.
Holmes converted 13 of his first 14 saves but has struggled since, blowing nine of his 22 opportunities. Despite this, manager Aaron Boone has stated that Holmes will continue to be the closer.
On the other hand, the Guardians are eager to avoid a repeat of their recent series in Milwaukee, where they were swept while scoring just four runs. Following an 8-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on August 2, Cleveland’s lead in the division has shrunk from six games to just two, with a 5-10 record in their last 15 games.
Cleveland had a successful three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, scoring 17 runs, but they were held to just 13 hits over the weekend, with star player José Ramírez struggling at the plate.
"That was a frustrating series," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt.
For New York, rookie Luis Gil (12-6, 3.25 ERA) will take the mound, looking to rebound from a disappointing outing where he allowed four runs in four innings against the White Sox. Gil has faced the Guardians once in his career, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings during a previous loss.
Matthew Boyd (0-0, 1.69 ERA) will start for Cleveland, making his second appearance since joining the rotation. In his season debut against the Cubs, Boyd gave up one run over 5 1/3 innings, and he has a 5.19 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees, with his last appearance in New York occurring in 2019.
