Game Preview
Robert Griffin III once captured the hearts of Washington, D.C., with his impressive rookie season in 2012, leading the team to the playoffs and earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. However, his early success pales in comparison to that of the current Heisman Trophy-winning rookie quarterback for the franchise.
Jayden Daniels has propelled the Commanders to their best start since 2011, sitting at 3-1 as they gear up for a Week 5 matchup against the Cleveland Browns in Landover, Md., on Sunday. Washington has bounced back from a season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with three consecutive victories.
"I had no expectations," Daniels said about the start of his season. "I just focused on how much I could learn and adapt to becoming a pro."
Drafted second overall from LSU, Daniels, 23, is quickly emerging as a frontrunner for the same award Griffin won over a decade ago. His completion percentage of 82.1 not only leads the NFL but also sets a record for the highest mark during any four-game stretch with at least 50 attempts.
Although Daniels has thrown three touchdown passes and rushed for four more, the Commanders’ offense is thriving, averaging 30.3 points per game, the third-highest in the league. Remarkably, he has led 23 scoring drives while only tossing 19 incompletions and has been intercepted just once in 106 attempts.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn praised Daniels’ work ethic and preparation, stating, "You can feel his dedication. There’s no magic involved; it’s all about hard work and building confidence."
In contrast, the Browns, currently at 1-3, have struggled offensively, averaging only 16.5 points per game, the sixth-lowest in the league. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy emphasized the need for the offense to sync up: "If one person messes up, the whole play fails."
Cleveland showed promise early against the Raiders last Sunday, scoring on their first two drives but faltering thereafter. Coach Kevin Stefanski pointed out that small mistakes can have significant consequences: "We focus on what we can control and improve."
Star running back Nick Chubb has been ruled out for Sunday’s game after participating in practice for the first time since his season-ending knee injury last year. Tight end David Njoku is questionable, while several other key players are dealing with injuries.
On the Commanders’ side, running back Brian Robinson Jr. is a game-time decision due to a knee issue, but Austin Ekeler has cleared concussion protocol and will play. However, wide receiver Noah Brown and defensive end Clelin Ferrell will not participate.
