Game Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers are off to a historic start, achieving the best opening record in franchise history and the strongest start for any NBA team in nearly ten years.

With a 12-0 record, the Cavaliers head into Wednesday’s game against a struggling Philadelphia 76ers squad. The Sixers, fresh off a 111-99 loss to the New York Knicks on Tuesday, could be further disadvantaged as Tyrese Maxey (hamstring) is definitely out, while Joel Embiid and Paul George remain questionable due to knee issues.

Embiid made his season debut on Tuesday, scoring 13 points on 2-of-11 shooting, while George has played in the last five games after missing the season’s first five. If either misses the matchup, it could spell trouble for Philadelphia against the surging Cavaliers.

“We’re winning in different ways,” said Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland’s leading scorer with an average of 23.7 points. Mitchell played a pivotal role in Monday’s 119-113 victory over the Chicago Bulls, scoring 36 points with seven three-pointers.

The Cavaliers join an elite group as the eighth NBA team in history to start 12-0 or better. The last team to achieve this feat was the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who went 24-0 en route to a record-breaking 73-win season. Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson is excited about the achievement, saying, “A great start like this is something to celebrate.”

Meanwhile, the Sixers, at 2-8, are searching for positive momentum. Despite making his debut, Embiid appeared rusty, which Sixers coach Nick Nurse attributed to conditioning. Embiid expressed interest in playing again Wednesday, though his status remains uncertain.

Sixers rookie Jared McCain, who scored 23 points on Tuesday, praised Embiid’s presence: “It’s pretty easy playing with him.” George added that Embiid’s influence draws considerable defensive attention.

No matter which Sixers players take the court, Mitchell and the Cavaliers are prepared for a challenge. “We’re going to get teams’ best shots,” Mitchell stated. “We’re going to get tested early, and I have no doubt we will.”
