Game Preview

On Tuesday, Chris Sale, a leading candidate for the Cy Young Award, takes the mound for Atlanta as they kick off a three-game series at home against the Colorado Rockies, a team looking to upset the Braves’ playoff aspirations.

The Braves (74-63) trail the Philadelphia Phillies by seven games in the National League East, following a weekend series loss to them. Atlanta is just ahead of the New York Mets by a game for the last NL wild-card slot.

The Rockies (51-87), owning the weakest record in the National League, dropped two out of three against the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend, although they managed a series win against the Braves in early August.

The matchup features left-handers with Chris Sale (15-3, 2.58 ERA) facing off against Kyle Freeland (4-6, 5.51). Sale is coming off a victory over the Minnesota Twins last Wednesday, where he conceded just one run over six innings. He’s currently on a five-win streak and hasn’t given up more than three runs in a start since June 1.

While Sale has yet to claim a win against Colorado across three career encounters, Freeland celebrated his 200th career appearance with a win against Miami last Wednesday, marking his 800th career strikeout—a Rockies’ franchise fourth-best record.

Freeland, with a 1-4 record and a 6.34 ERA in nine starts against Atlanta, did not factor in the decision during his last outing against them on August 11, exiting early due to a blister after surrendering three runs in just under four innings.

Following a tough series in Philadelphia, the Braves are facing an uphill battle to clinch their seventh consecutive division title.

“We really felt like we could have left Philadelphia with three wins out of four," stated Atlanta’s manager Brian Snitker. “But we didn’t execute well enough.”

The Braves also faced a disheartening 3-2 loss in 11 innings on Sunday, marked by a lack of clutch hitting, highlighted by a failure to score with bases loaded in the ninth.

“There’s no way to soften the blow,” said Atlanta’s first baseman Matt Olson. “Losing like this is tough.”

The series also serves as a homecoming for Rockies’ rookie infielder Aaron Schunk, who is from the Atlanta area and attended the University of Georgia. Schunk, a second-round pick in 2019 and promoted to the majors on June 28, is looking to make an impact, currently batting .175 with one home run in the majors.
