Game Preview

The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing a sluggish start to the season, and worries are escalating following two consecutive home losses.

The tension in Dallas could reach a boiling point on Thursday night when the Cowboys (1-2) take on the New York Giants (1-2).

While both the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens performed well against Dallas, the Cowboys have had the upper hand against the Giants recently, winning the last six matchups and 13 of the last 14 overall.

In their two games last season, Dallas outscored the Giants by a staggering 89-17, marking the largest point differential the Cowboys have had against an NFC East opponent in a single season.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is not dwelling on past successes. Like Giants coach Brian Daboll, he is focused solely on the upcoming game.

“I meet with the team every day,” McCarthy said, noting that his squad had previously enjoyed a 16-game home winning streak before the recent losses. “We’re aware of where we stand: 1-2. Now we have our first division game ahead of us.”

Giants safety Jason Pinnock sees Thursday’s matchup as a fresh chance.

“My analogy is like with my big brother,” Pinnock explained. “He probably beat on me for 12 years, but in that 13th, I’m coming for him. It is what it is.”

All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb was visibly frustrated during the game against Baltimore, appearing to demand more targets as the offense struggled, falling behind by three touchdowns.

After taking a couple of days to address the media, Lamb admitted his shortcomings.

“Honestly, I let myself down and the team by not producing as a game-breaker,” Lamb said. “I let the game get to my head a bit.”

This situation echoed a previous year’s 42-10 loss at San Francisco, where Lamb tied his season-low with four receptions for just 49 yards. He responded then with four straight games over 100 yards.

“I plan on doing that again,” Lamb said, chuckling at the memory of the 49ers matchup.

In their last meeting, Prescott threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns, which raises concerns for New York’s already battered secondary.

Cornerback Mike McCloud injured his knee in the season opener and has missed the last two games. Additionally, cornerbacks Dru Phillips and Adoree Jackson exited with calf injuries on Sunday and will not play Thursday. Tre Hawkins is expected to be activated for the game.

Historically, the Cowboys have never played on the road with just three days’ rest. This rarity is largely due to the team’s annual Thanksgiving game, which explains the unusual statistic.

McCarthy couldn’t recall how often his previous team, the Packers, played on the road on a Thursday after a Sunday during his 12-plus seasons in Green Bay.
