Game Preview
Dak Prescott was in the midst of his 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign the last time the Dallas Cowboys faced the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This storied rivalry, which includes three Super Bowl matchups, is set to resume in primetime during Week 5 as the Cowboys (2-2) visit the Steelers (3-1) on "Sunday Night Football." Prescott’s previous encounter with Pittsburgh resulted in a 35-30 victory, part of an 11-game winning streak for Dallas, and it marks his first meeting with the Steelers since then.
Now 31 and the highest-paid player in the NFL, Prescott leads an offense struggling with the league’s worst rushing game, averaging just 75.3 yards per contest, and lacking significant receiving options beyond All-Pro CeeDee Lamb.
"I have a lot of respect for Dak Prescott," said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. "He maintains a steady demeanor and uses his mobility wisely. He extends plays and has a great rapport with CeeDee Lamb."
The Cowboys have had extra time to prepare since securing a 20-15 victory over the New York Giants in Week 4, where Prescott achieved his highest passer rating of the season (125.5) with touchdown passes to Lamb and running back Rico Dowdle.
Tomlin also praised his quarterback, Justin Fields, who continues to start while Russell Wilson recovers from a calf injury and is officially listed as questionable for the game.
Pittsburgh suffered its first loss of the season last week, falling 27-24 to Indianapolis. Despite Fields throwing for 312 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 55 yards and two scores, the Steelers couldn’t capitalize on a late opportunity to tie the game.
"I didn’t see any hesitance from Justin," Tomlin remarked. "His consistent demeanor has been evident, especially in those critical moments."
Fields won’t have to face the Cowboys’ pass rushers Micah Parsons (ankle) and DeMarcus Lawrence (injured reserve) this Sunday.
"It’s an unfortunate part of the game," Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy stated regarding the injuries. "Winning in this league requires many players. This situation opens up opportunities for others."
Dallas’ secondary may also be affected, as cornerback Caelen Carson (shoulder) is questionable, along with Trevon Diggs, who did not practice Friday due to an ankle injury.
Fields has faced the Cowboys once before, completing 17 of 23 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions during a 49-29 loss while with the Chicago Bears on October 30, 2022. He also rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown, achieving the third-highest passer rating (120.0) of his career.
Steelers left guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) is set for his season debut on Sunday, while running back Jaylen Warren (knee), linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin), and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson (ankle) are out. Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks has also been ruled out after developing an infection following a knee procedure.
