Game Preview
Sean Payton’s old team and his current one aren’t seeing the success he’s used to.
Payton’s Denver Broncos face the New Orleans Saints, where he led them to nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win over 15 seasons, on Thursday night.
Both teams are struggling. The Broncos (3-3) saw their three-game win streak snapped by the Chargers, while the Saints (2-4) lost to the Buccaneers, marking their fourth straight defeat under Dennis Allen, Payton’s former defensive coordinator.
While both teams need a win, the game will inevitably focus on Payton’s return to New Orleans, where he first took the head coach job in 2006, following Hurricane Katrina. Reflecting on the upcoming matchup, Payton acknowledged the emotional weight of going back but knows Saints fans might not be welcoming, despite the halftime celebration for Drew Brees, who’s being inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame.
In Denver, Payton is trying to mold the offense to fit rookie quarterback Bo Nix, but Nix’s performance ranks low in passer rating and total yards. The Broncos’ defense, however, has been their strength, ranked fourth in points and yards allowed.
In contrast, Allen’s Saints defense has struggled, ranking last in yards allowed and 23rd in points allowed. Allen praised Payton’s ability to exploit weaknesses, knowing that his former boss would be ready to take advantage of the Saints’ current vulnerabilities.
New Orleans is focused on breaking their losing streak as they wrap up three games in 11 days. Rookie QB Spencer Rattler will start in place of injured Derek Carr, after showing flashes of promise last week despite a second-half collapse. The Saints are also missing key players, including wide receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, and linebacker Pete Werner.
For Denver, cornerback Pat Surtain II is out due to a concussion, along with offensive tackle Alex Palczewski.
