Florida State has been running roughshod over opponents since their statement win over Alabama, piling up 143-13 against East Texas A&M and Kent State while climbing into the Top 10. Now, the real work begins as they open ACC play on the road.
The big storyline is quarterback Tommy Castellanos’ health. He left last week’s game with a leg scare, and while he insists he’s fine, head coach Mike Norvell is keeping things cautious. Even if Castellanos isn’t at full strength, this offense doesn’t lack firepower. Florida State leads the nation in scoring (58 ppg) and total offense (628.7 ypg). Their run game alone is terrifying, 498 rushing yards last outing set a program record.
Defensively, the ‘Noles bring just as much bite, holding Alabama to 17 points and ranking top-15 nationally in scoring defense. With their size, speed, and depth, Florida State still looks like the team to beat in this matchup.
Virginia Cavaliers: Ready for the Prove-It Test
Virginia’s offense has been electric, ranking 11th nationally with 45.5 points per game. Quarterback Chandler Morris has been sharp, throwing for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns already, including a monster 380-yard, four-score effort against Stanford. Wideout Trell Harris’ three-touchdown performance last week further showcased how explosive this attack can be.
But while their firepower is undeniable, the Cavaliers haven’t faced a defense anywhere near Florida State’s caliber. This will be the litmus test for whether their gaudy offensive numbers translate against elite opposition.
On defense, Virginia has been serviceable but not dominant, giving Florida State a real opportunity to exploit mismatches both on the ground and through the air.
