Game Preview
Top-ranked Georgia aims to extend its 41-game regular-season winning streak in an SEC showdown at Kentucky this Saturday.
Georgia (2-0) has not experienced a regular-season defeat since a loss to Florida in November 2020. The Bulldogs maintained their record-breaking SEC streak with a decisive 48-3 victory over Tennessee Tech last Saturday, having overwhelmed their first two opponents of the season by a combined score of 82-6.
In their latest victory, quarterback Carson Beck matched a school record by throwing five touchdown passes in just over half a game. As Georgia prepares for its first away game, head coach Kirby Smart acknowledges the challenge ahead.
“Kroger Field is always a tough venue,” Smart noted. “Our past games there have been close. It’s always a physical matchup against Kentucky, and with the added intensity of an SEC road game, we need to be ready for a loud and challenging environment.”
The game will also feature a notable return for Kentucky’s starting quarterback, Brock Vandagriff, who transferred from Georgia where he served as a backup, accumulating 165 passing yards and two touchdowns over three seasons.
Smart expressed admiration for Vandagriff’s contributions to Georgia, saying, “Brock was an incredible part of our team, always putting the team ahead of himself. We respect what he’s accomplished.”
Vandagriff’s tenure at Georgia included a touchdown in last year’s 51-13 rout of Kentucky. However, following a dismal performance in Kentucky’s recent 31-6 defeat to South Carolina, Vandagriff and the Wildcats are looking to rebound against his former team.
Addressing the upcoming challenge, Vandagriff said, “We’re facing a formidable Georgia team, but we’re also confident in our abilities. It’s crucial that we learn from our mistakes against South Carolina and prepare vigorously for Georgia.”
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, facing a winless record against Georgia in his tenure, emphasized the need for improvement and resilience. “We have to acknowledge our recent performance, learn from it, and prepare for the even greater challenge of facing the nation’s top team,” he stated.
Georgia holds a commanding lead in the series history with Kentucky, achieving a 63-12-2 record. The Wildcats’ most recent victory over a top-ranked team was against LSU in 2007, and they look to capture a similar upset this weekend.
