Game Preview
Top-ranked Texas continues its push for a national championship as No. 5 Georgia visits Austin on Saturday for a high-stakes SEC showdown.
Texas (6-0, 2-0 SEC), in its first year in the conference, hosts its first ranked opponent, while Georgia (5-1, 3-1) faces the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time since 2009. With both teams in the top 5, the game could play a major role in shaping the SEC title race and postseason standings.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian sees this game as a key test of his team’s status in the SEC, while Georgia, having won 44 of its last 45 regular-season games, looks to continue its dominance. "It’s a measuring stick," Sarkisian said. "We’re playing a great team that’s been at the top, and now we’ll see where we stand."
The Longhorns are coming off a dominant 34-3 win over No. 18 Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, their best start since 2009, when they made the BCS title game. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returned from injury last week, throwing for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Georgia, despite its 47-3 senior class record, comes in as an underdog after a loss to Alabama. The Bulldogs won their last two SEC games but struggled defensively, allowing three second-half touchdowns in a 41-31 win over Mississippi State. Coach Kirby Smart emphasized the need for a complete game: "We haven’t played our best yet, and we’ll need to in Austin."
Quarterback Carson Beck has been a bright spot for Georgia, throwing for 459 yards last week, the third-highest in school history. Smart sees parallels between Beck and Texas QB Ewers, noting both are athletic and strong decision-makers.
This will be the sixth meeting between the schools, with Texas winning the last matchup 28-21 in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. Georgia’s only trip to Austin was in 1957, when Texas won 13-8.
