Game Preview
The Houston Texans hold a two-game lead in the AFC South and enter Sunday’s road matchup against the Green Bay Packers with the second-best record in the AFC.
Despite their strong start, injuries and inconsistent play have wide receiver Tank Dell optimistic about the team’s potential. “Once we get everyone back and in sync,” Dell said, “the sky’s the limit.”
Houston (5-1) continued to dominate last week with a 41-21 win over New England, extending its winning streak to three games. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud shined, throwing three touchdowns, including one to Joe Mixon, who also rushed for 102 yards and a score. Stefon Diggs and Dell added receiving touchdowns, with Stroud totaling 10 TD passes and a 68.3% completion rate this season.
“He’s incredibly talented," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Stroud. "He’s poised, processes quickly, and anticipates throws well.”
Green Bay (4-2) will test Stroud’s composure with a defense that leads the NFL in turnover differential (+9). Safety Xavier McKinney tops the league with five interceptions. “They have a great secondary, very physical,” Dell said. “It’s going to be a good battle.”
The Packers put up a season-high 34 points in last week’s win over Arizona. Quarterback Jordan Love threw four touchdown passes, with Romeo Doubs catching two in his return from a one-game suspension. Green Bay also signed veteran kicker Brandon McManus after releasing rookie Brayden Narveson.
Houston faces some lineup changes on defense, with Mario Edwards Jr. suspended for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. However, Denico Autry returns after a six-game suspension for a PED violation.
The Packers lead the all-time series 4-1, with three straight wins over Houston, two by at least 15 points. LaFleur, who started his NFL coaching career with the Texans, now faces his former team. Both teams will be missing key players, including Texans wideout Robert Woods and Packers defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt.
