Game Preview
The Minnesota Twins are aiming to complete a series sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis, hoping their straightforward approach will secure the win.
After securing an 8-3 victory in the series opener on Monday and a dominant 13-3 win on Tuesday, the Twins are looking to maintain their offensive momentum. However, manager Rocco Baldelli acknowledges the challenge ahead.
“It’s a very strong pitching staff,” Baldelli remarked. “The starters we face this series are top-tier. You can’t just swing wildly and expect to hit a few. You need to focus, stay grounded, and make each pitcher work for every pitch.”
Royals left-hander Cole Ragans (9-7, 3.27 ERA) will aim to disrupt the Twins’ offense in his 25th start of the season. Ragans, who has struck out 166 batters in 140 1/3 innings, is seeking his third consecutive win. His last outing saw him limit the Boston Red Sox to one earned run over 6 1/3 innings, though he allowed three unearned runs.
In three career starts against the Twins, Ragans has yet to secure a win, holding a 3.00 ERA.
The Twins are set to counter with right-hander Louie Varland (0-4, 6.46), who will make his seventh start of the season after being recalled from Triple-A Saint Paul. Varland, who last pitched in the majors on Friday with a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians, gave up three runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Third baseman Jose Miranda is looking to continue his strong performance at the plate, following a 3-for-5 game with two RBIs on Tuesday. Miranda, who hit a single, double, and triple, has raised his batting average to .313.
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. will also look to keep up his impressive play after going 2-for-6 with a home run in the first two games of the series. Witt is hitting .347 with 23 home runs and 88 RBIs this season, making a compelling case for the American League MVP — an award Kansas City has not seen since George Brett in 1980.
Despite a resurgence this season, the Royals have struggled against the Twins, falling to 2-7 in their nine meetings this year. Royals manager Matt Quatraro reflected on the challenge posed by Minnesota, saying, “They’re a good team with a deep roster. They’ve been division champions three or four times in the last five years. They’re versatile, with solid pitching and a lot of talent.”
