Game Preview

Five games into the Jim Harbaugh era, the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense remains one of the NFL’s least productive.

Quarterback Justin Herbert, despite his hefty salary, is averaging just 163 passing yards per game. However, the Chargers (3-2) hope to spark their attack on Monday night as they face the Arizona Cardinals’ struggling defense in Glendale, Arizona.

The Cardinals (2-4) are tied for 27th in scoring defense, allowing 27.2 points per game. Arizona has conceded 34 or more points in three games this season, including last week’s 34-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

This could provide the opportunity Los Angeles needs to find its offensive rhythm. The Chargers are currently ranked 26th in scoring offense, averaging 18.2 points per game, and 28th in total offense with 281 yards per game in Harbaugh’s debut season.

Herbert managed to pass for over 200 yards for the first time this season in last week’s 23-16 win over the Denver Broncos, with a season-high 237 passing yards.

“I’d love to win every game by 60 points, but this is the NFL,” Herbert said. With 815 passing yards on the season, Herbert ranks 28th in the league but remains focused on improvement.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, are eager to turn their season around after a disappointing start, which includes a 42-14 loss to the Washington Commanders. Last week, Arizona fell 34-13 to the Packers after trailing 24-0 in the first half and losing three fumbles in the second.

Despite the setbacks, quarterback Kyler Murray remains optimistic. “I have full faith in our team and coaches,” Murray said, confident that a turnaround is still possible.

Arizona’s rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who suffered a concussion in last week’s game, remains in protocol but has participated in non-contact drills. His status for the game is still uncertain, but head coach Jonathan Gannon described his progress as "encouraging."

On the Chargers’ side, head coach Jim Harbaugh will wear a heart monitor during the game after experiencing an arrhythmia during last week’s contest. He passed cardiology tests and joked that his doctor described him as having “the heart of an athlete.”

The Chargers are also dealing with key injuries, including star pass rusher Joey Bosa (hip), and cornerbacks Kristian Fulton and Deane Leonard (hamstrings), among others. The Cardinals have several players sidelined as well, including offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum and linebacker Owen Pappoe.

Both teams will be looking for a much-needed win to gain momentum as the season progresses.
