Game Preview

Shohei Ohtani looks to make major league history as his Los Angeles Dodgers kick off a four-game set against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Ohtani, inching closer to the first 50-home run and 50-stolen base season in MLB history, drove in his 47th homer and swiped his 48th base in the Dodgers’ recent 10-8 win over the Cubs. His pursuit of this historic milestone is drawing attention from teammates and fans alike. “We’re all aware and it’s exciting to witness,” said Dodgers catcher Will Smith. “Aside from his record chase, he’s really helping the team win.”

Tommy Edman also continues his hot streak, hitting two homers for the second consecutive game, and sharing that he’s refined his batting practice routine which seems to be paying dividends.

Despite recent struggles, the NL West-leading Dodgers (87-59) maintain a solid lead over their division rivals, while the Braves (79-67) are trying to bounce back from recent losses to stay competitive in the wild-card race. The Braves, now a game behind the Mets for the NL’s last wild card spot, struggled offensively in their last series, a concern echoed by manager Brian Snitker.

The teams last met in May, with the Dodgers sweeping a three-game series in Los Angeles. This time, Atlanta hopes to turn the tables starting with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach (5-7, 3.78 ERA) facing Dodgers’ Landon Knack (2-3, 3.00 ERA) in Friday’s game. Both young pitchers aim to leverage this high-profile matchup to rebound from recent performances.
