Game Preview
The Milwaukee Brewers will call on rookie right-hander Tobias Myers to secure a series split against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday afternoon in the final game of their four-game set between division leaders.
After dropping the first two games of the series, where the Dodgers hit six home runs, the Brewers bounced back with a 5-4 win on Wednesday night, capitalizing on three Dodgers errors to score four unearned runs.
Milwaukee fell behind early, allowing three unearned runs in the first inning, but rallied with three runs in the second and one in the fourth. The Dodgers equalized in the seventh, but the Brewers reclaimed the lead when Jackson Chourio’s single resulted in a run-scoring error by right fielder Mookie Betts.
Devin Williams, the reigning NL reliever of the year, secured the win with a perfect ninth inning, retiring Shohei Ohtani, Betts, and Freddie Freeman in order. Since returning from a back injury, Williams has allowed just one run in five innings over four appearances.
The Brewers avoided their first four-game losing streak of the season, maintaining their lead in the National League Central by 8 1/2 games over the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.
Jake Bauers, who hit a solo homer, praised the team’s resilience, noting their strong work ethic and preparation.
The Dodgers saw their lead in the NL West reduced to 2 1/2 games over the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, who are on a hot streak.
Ohtani, who leads the NL with 37 home runs, was held without a homer on Wednesday but stole two bases, becoming the first Dodgers player since Matt Kemp in 2011 to reach 35 homers and 35 stolen bases in a season.
Myers (6-5, 2.79 ERA) is coming off a stellar start where he pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out nine, though he did not earn the win in the Brewers’ 1-0 victory over Cincinnati. Despite a solid 2.38 ERA in his last seven starts, Myers is 1-3 over that stretch and has not faced the Dodgers before.
The Dodgers will counter with Jack Flaherty (9-5, 2.97 ERA), who is making his third start since being traded from the Detroit Tigers. Flaherty is 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA since joining the Dodgers, having allowed four runs in 11 2/3 innings while striking out 17. In his last outing, he gave up four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 9-5 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Flaherty’s ability to handle high-pressure situations, noting his skill at making crucial pitches.
Flaherty has a career 4.53 ERA in 18 games against the Brewers, including 17 starts.
