Game Preview

Milwaukee right-hander Colin Rea will face a tough challenge from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ dynamic duo of Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts on Tuesday night, as the Brewers aim to level their series against the division leaders.

Rea (10-3, 3.38 ERA) will go up against rookie right-hander Gavin Stone (9-5, 3.71) in the second game of the four-game set.

In Monday’s opener, Betts, just back from a 45-game absence due to a broken left hand, and Ohtani each hit home runs and drove in all five of the Dodgers’ runs in a 5-2 victory. Betts’ two-run homer in the third was his 11th of the season, while Ohtani’s two-run blast in the fifth gave him the National League lead with 36 home runs. Ohtani also stole his 33rd base, leading to another run driven in by Betts in the seventh.

Clayton Kershaw, in his fourth start since returning from shoulder surgery, threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run and three hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. The Dodgers, who have won four consecutive games and seven of their last nine, hold a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL West, while the Brewers are comfortably ahead by 7 1/2 games in the NL Central.

“We’re getting some guys back and our team is starting to look like what we want it to be,” Kershaw remarked.

The Brewers have struggled recently against the Dodgers, losing eight of the last nine matchups, including three of four this season.

Manager Pat Murphy noted his surprise at how his young players handled the moment in the series opener, adding, “We haven’t scored more than three runs in our last three games after a stretch where we scored 42 runs in four games.”

Stone, who has struggled with a 6.91 ERA in his last six starts, will face the Brewers for the first time. In his most recent outing, he allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 9-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rea, meanwhile, is coming off a stellar performance where he allowed five hits and no runs in seven innings, striking out nine in a 10-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on August 6. He’s 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA in his last seven appearances and 1-0 with a 5.32 ERA in six career games against the Dodgers.
