Game Preview
No team in Major League Baseball has bounced back quite like the New York Mets. The Los Angeles Dodgers faced their fair share of hurdles during a regular season where they notched 98 wins.
As the National League Championship Series shifts into high stakes, it’s hard to imagine it being anything but a nail-biter after two games.
The Mets and Dodgers will battle for the series edge on Wednesday night in Game 3 of this best-of-seven showdown, hosted by New York.
Luis Severino (1-0, 4.50 ERA in the playoffs) is set to take the mound for the Mets, facing fellow right-hander Walker Buehler (0-1, 10.80).
The Mets evened the series on Monday with a thrilling 7-3 victory, highlighted by Mark Vientos’ second-inning grand slam.
While Vientos delivered the game-winning runs, it was Francisco Lindor who ignited the Mets’ momentum with a leadoff homer, capping an impressive eight-pitch duel against opener Ryan Brasier.
This homer reflects the Mets’ resilience; they were once 11 games under .500 in early June and didn’t secure a playoff spot until they split a doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves on September 30. They were also on the brink of elimination against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL wild-card series on October 3, but Pete Alonso’s clutch three-run homer turned the tide.
After a tough 7-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the NL Division Series on October 6, the Mets bounced back, eliminating their rivals in the subsequent games. However, they opened the NLCS with a shocking 9-0 loss—the largest postseason defeat in franchise history.
"We’ve faced challenges all season," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza remarked Tuesday. "We’ve been knocked down but always found a way to rise again. This series is going to be thrilling—a true back-and-forth battle between two strong teams."
Lindor’s homer broke a remarkable stretch for the Dodgers, who had scored 23 consecutive runs and pitched 33 scoreless innings dating back to the third inning of a Game 3 loss to the San Diego Padres in the NLDS.
This defeat also highlighted the vulnerability of the Dodgers’ pitching staff and the difficulties of maintaining a consistent rotation throughout a long series.
With Gavin Stone and Tyler Glasnow sidelined for the season due to injuries, and three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw also out, the Dodgers have struggled to find reliable starters. The only pitcher to log more than six innings since September 1 was Jack Flaherty, who pitched 7 1/3 innings against Cleveland on September 8 and followed that with another strong seven-inning performance on Sunday.
On Monday, Brasier was backed by four lower-leverage relievers, including Brent Honeywell Jr., who threw three innings in his first big-league outing since September 24.
"Jack really set the standard in Game 1, showcasing how it’s done," Buehler said Tuesday. "We had to piece things together in Game 2."
Both teams will see injured third-place hitters return on Wednesday, as the Mets’ Brandon Nimmo battles plantar fasciitis in his left foot and the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman deals with a sprained right ankle that kept him out of Game 4 of the NLDS.
Severino last pitched on October 6, not factoring into the decision after allowing three runs over six innings in the Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Phillies. He has a postseason record of 2-4 with a 5.01 ERA over 13 games (12 starts).
Buehler, on the other hand, faced defeat in his 2024 postseason debut on October 8, giving up six runs over five innings in a 6-5 loss to the Padres. He has a playoff record of 3-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 16 career postseason starts.
In his history against the Dodgers, Severino is 0-1 with a 10.50 ERA in two games (one start), while Buehler holds a 1-1 record with a 5.00 ERA in five starts against the Mets.
