Game Preview
The New York Mets are aware of their ability to bounce back after falling behind this season, while the Los Angeles Dodgers remember the last time the Mets faced adversity.
As the teams prepare for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, the Mets aim to even the series, and the Dodgers hope to take control.
Starting for the Mets will be left-hander Jose Quintana (0-0, 0.00 ERA in the playoffs), while right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (1-0, 5.63 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers.
On Wednesday, the Dodgers secured an 8-0 victory, fueled by home runs from Enrique Hernandez, Shohei Ohtani, and Max Muncy, giving them a 2-1 series lead. Hernandez’s sixth-inning shot marked the game’s first extra-base hit, as both offenses struggled in the chilly 51-degree weather. The Dodgers were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position before Hernandez’s homer, and the Mets were just 1-for-10.
Ohtani’s three-run homer in the eighth and Muncy’s lead-off shot in the ninth solidified the Dodgers’ second shutout of the NLCS, following their 9-0 win in Game 1. These two victories rank among the most dominant shutout wins in Dodgers postseason history and mark the most lopsided shutout losses for the Mets.
"I think in the playoffs, everything becomes fast and blurry," Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler said after allowing three hits in four innings during Game 3. "If we come out and play poorly tomorrow, we won’t care about today’s performance."
The Mets demonstrated their resilience in Game 2, with Francisco Lindor leading off with a homer and Mark Vientos hitting a grand slam in a 7-3 win.
Having slipped 11 games under .500 in early June, the Mets only secured their playoff spot after a doubleheader split with the Atlanta Braves on September 30. In the NL wild-card series, they trailed the Milwaukee Brewers by two runs in the ninth before Pete Alonso’s three-run homer clinched a 4-2 victory.
"This isn’t new for us," said New York pitcher Luis Severino, who took the loss on Wednesday. "We need to bounce back Thursday and aim for the win. Winning two out of three here would be massive for us."
Quintana last pitched on October 9, allowing one unearned run over five-plus innings in a 4-1 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies to advance to the NLCS. He has a 2.43 ERA in seven career postseason games.
Yamamoto earned a win in his last outing, allowing two hits over five scoreless innings against the Padres in Game 5 of the NL Division Series. In his first postseason start, he struggled, giving up five runs in three innings against San Diego.
Quintana has faced the Dodgers 13 times in the regular season, with a 2.04 ERA, but has a history of struggles in the postseason against them. Yamamoto faced the Mets earlier in the season, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings during a 9-4 loss.
