Game Preview

The New York Mets, who were 11 games under .500 in late May, revived their season by embracing a defiant "us against the world" mindset. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez summed up their attitude, joking that the best way to silence critics was to "go stink together and have fun doing it."

However, the Mets’ underdog playoff run now faces a major challenge as the Los Angeles Dodgers stand on the verge of securing the National League pennant. The Mets will fight to avoid elimination, while the Dodgers aim to clinch the title in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series on Friday.

Los Angeles will send right-hander Jack Flaherty (1-1, 2.92 ERA this postseason) to the mound, while New York counters with left-hander David Peterson (1-0, 2.08 ERA).

The Dodgers cruised to a 10-2 victory in Game 4 on Thursday, powered by a leadoff homer from Shohei Ohtani and a 4-for-5 performance from Mookie Betts, who added a home run and four RBIs.

This win continued the Dodgers’ dominant postseason run. Despite making the playoffs 12 straight years, they’ve captured just one World Series title (in the shortened 2020 season). Los Angeles looked to be in trouble earlier, trailing the Padres 2-1 in the Division Series, but they bounced back by outscoring San Diego 10-0 in the final two games.

In the NLCS, the Dodgers have overpowered the Mets, outscoring them 30-9 to take a 3-1 series lead. Los Angeles holds the edge in batting average (.259 to .212) and walks (31 to 17).

"I like the underdog mentality our guys have embraced," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "It’s funny to say that with the Dodgers, but I like it."

The Mets, though facing long odds, have excelled under pressure all year. After May 29, they posted the best record in baseball (67-40), clinched a playoff spot in the season’s second-to-last game, and pulled off a stunning Game 3 win in the Wild Card Series with Pete Alonso’s three-run homer.

Just eight teams have overcome a 3-1 deficit in an LCS since 1985, with the 2020 Dodgers being the last to do so against the Braves.

Pete Alonso described the 2024 Mets as resilient, saying, "We have fun, we live in the moment, but at the end of the day, we bounce back strong."

Flaherty dominated in Game 1, allowing just two hits over seven scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ 9-0 win. He has a 3.38 ERA in seven career postseason games.

Peterson, making his first playoff start, last pitched in Game 1, giving up three runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 innings. He holds a 2.53 ERA in six playoff games across two seasons.

Flaherty faced the Mets once in 2019, allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings, while Peterson has struggled against the Dodgers in the regular season, posting a 5.74 ERA in four appearances.
