Game Preview
Last season, the Detroit Lions eliminated the Los Angeles Rams from the playoffs. This Sunday night, the Rams revisit Detroit with aspirations of beginning a new Super Bowl journey.
While some Rams might see this as a revenge matchup, quarterback Matthew Stafford, facing his old team, emphasizes it as a fresh start.
"This is the beginning of something completely new," Stafford remarked. "I’m thrilled to kick off the season, especially with such a formidable challenge in their home environment. It’s an exciting test."
Stafford has star receivers Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, along with emerging lead running back Kyren Williams and new addition, former Michigan star Blake Corum, a third-round pick.
The Rams’ defense must adapt without Aaron Donald, who retired following last season’s playoff defeat.
Rams coach Sean McVay acknowledged, "You can’t simply replace Aaron Donald, but his legacy has inspired our players."
Lions coach Dan Campbell views the revamped Rams as an enhanced squad compared to last year.
"This Rams team looks stronger than the one we faced last season," Campbell noted. "Despite losing Donald, their youthful, energetic front looks formidable."
Detroit has retained most of its offensive starters, except for Jonah Jackson who joined the Rams. The Lions’ offense will lean on runners Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs, overcoming a preseason hamstring issue, confirmed his readiness for Sunday.
Quarterback Jared Goff connects with All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and second-year tight end Sam LaPorta. Expectations are high for third-year wideout Jameson Williams.
The Lions have revamped their defensive line and secondary, aiming to improve a defense that struggled against the pass last season.
Newcomers like cornerback Carlton Davis and rookie Terrion Arnold are expected to bolster the defense against Stafford’s trusted targets, Nacua and Kupp.
"This will be a real test, but our guys are eager for it," said Campbell. "Arnold is particularly excited for his debut."
Injuries may impact both teams’ lineups, with Rams lineman Rob Havenstein and several Lions players facing fitness concerns ahead of the game.
