Las Vegas Aces: Gaining Momentum Behind Defensive Swagger
After a rocky start to the 2025 season, the Las Vegas Aces (4-2) look more like the reigning two-time champions fans expect. They stumbled early with losses to elite teams like the Liberty and Storm, but have responded with a 4-1 surge since May 20.
Led by MVP A’ja Wilson, who dropped 19 points with seven rebounds and monster defensive stats in their gritty 75-70 revenge win over Seattle, the Aces are refocused, especially on the defensive end. They locked down the Storm for three straight quarters under 17 points, proving they can smother just about anyone when locked in.
With depth in scoring, five players hitting double figures last game and renewed defensive grit, the Aces come into San Francisco confident and focused. Covering a big spread isn’t easy on the road, but Las Vegas has rediscovered its identity just in time.
Golden State Valkyries: Expansion Jitters Setting In
The Valkyries (2-5) started their inaugural season with a jolt, winning two of their first three. But reality has set in fast, with four straight losses, including a brutal 86-77 collapse against the Mercury where they led by 18 with just over four minutes left.
Rookie head coach Natalie Nakase didn’t mince words after the defeat, calling out her team’s lack of energy and urgency right from tip-off. Despite solid efforts from Veronica Burton (16 points) and Temi Fagbenle (12 points, 11 boards), Golden State’s closing ability and composure are clearly works in progress.
With their youthful inexperience and inconsistency, keeping up with an experienced powerhouse like Vegas could turn into a learning moment more than a competitive game.
Prediction
Las Vegas brings the firepower and lockdown defense. Golden State brings effort but not enough structure yet. Expect Vegas to control the tempo and cover the double-digit spread on the road.
