Game Preview
Tuesday’s matchup between the Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks at TD Garden in Boston will be a historic event, as it marks the first WNBA game held in the Celtics’ home arena.
"I think it’s important because New England has a rich sports history," said Sun coach Stephanie White. "It has a way of backing their teams. If we can expose the WNBA to a group of fans that might not have been exposed before, it’s an awesome opportunity for us."
The game will be played before a sellout crowd of 19,156, the largest audience ever for a Connecticut game. "Bringing the Sun fan and brand to Boston and moving into a new marketing area is exciting for women’s basketball," added Sun forward Brionna Jones.
Connecticut (19-7) comes off a disappointing 82-70 loss to the Atlanta Dream, where they struggled with 17 turnovers and shot only 35.4% from the field.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles (6-21) also lost on Sunday, falling 87-71 to the Las Vegas Aces, despite Dearica Hamby’s strong performance, recording her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
"Nothing but tremendous since she arrived," said Sparks coach Curt Miller about Hamby, who is enjoying a career year with averages of 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
The Sparks have lost four consecutive games, shooting 40.3% from the field and committing 21 turnovers in their last outing.
In their only previous meeting this season, Connecticut defeated Los Angeles 79-70 on June 18, with all five Sun starters scoring in double figures.
