Game Preview
No. 8 LSU spent much of last week’s game playing catch-up before securing a 29-26 overtime win against then-No. 9 Ole Miss with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to Kyren Lacy.
Now, the Tigers (5-1, 2-0 SEC) face a tough road test against a well-rested Arkansas squad on Saturday night in Fayetteville.
“That was one of those games where it felt like we were always a step behind,” said LSU coach Brian Kelly.
Since their season-opening loss to USC, LSU has rattled off five straight wins, with Nussmeier’s impressive play leading the way. He’s thrown for 1,989 yards and 18 touchdowns, completing 64.3 percent of his passes. Tight end Mason Taylor has become a top target with 33 catches, while Lacy has hauled in six touchdowns. Aaron Anderson also has 30 receptions, surpassing last season’s total by 18.
Nussmeier’s protection has been key, as he’s only been sacked twice this season, both times in LSU’s win over South Carolina. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman acknowledged the challenge his team faces, praising LSU’s offensive line and Nussmeier’s quick decision-making.
Arkansas (4-2, 2-1 SEC) had extra time to prepare, coming off a 19-14 upset over Tennessee on Oct. 5, where they stifled the Vols’ high-powered offense. Defensive coordinator Travis Williams has helped transform the Razorbacks, who are now allowing just 19.2 points per game. Against Tennessee, Arkansas employed a six-defensive back setup, which resulted in four sacks and limited Tennessee’s quarterback Nico Iamaleava to just 158 yards.
However, injuries may impact Arkansas. Star cornerback Jaylon Braxton could miss his fifth game, and quarterback Taylen Green’s status remains uncertain after sustaining a bone bruise in the last game. Green has passed for 1,502 yards and five touchdowns, while running back Ja’Quinden Jackson has rushed for 566 yards and 10 scores.
LSU holds a 44-23-2 lead in the all-time series, winning seven of the last eight matchups, including a narrow 34-31 victory last year.
